Ulysse Nardin Freak S Howlite - A North American Exclusive

To tag the 25th anniversary from the Freak collection, Ulysse Nardin has unveiled the Freak [S Howlite]-a limited edition of 15 pieces available exclusively within North America, featuring hour indicators crafted from Canadian howlite.

Within celebration of the Freak collection's 25th anniversary, Ulysse Nardin has introduced a timepiece specifically made for the North American market. Dubbed the Freak [S Howlite], this limited edition of 15 pieces is actually powered by the dual-oscillator Freak S movement and includes a material never before utilized by the brand: howlite. Each view features hour markers reduce from Canadian howlite, using the unique veining of the rock ensuring that no two items are exactly alike.

The actual Ulysse Nardin Freak [S Howlite] is really a North American exclusive, limited to 15 examples, commemorating 25 years in the Freak collection. It homes the UN-251 movement-featuring double balance wheels-and is introduced in a 45mm titanium situation, accented by natural howlite hour markers.

This year scars a double milestone: Ulysse Nardin, founded in Le Locle, Switzerland, in 1846, celebrates its 180th wedding anniversary, while the Freak collection gets to its 25th year. Once the Freak debuted in 2001, it defied convention through eschewing a traditional dial, fingers, and crown-the movement by itself served to display the time, while the pioneering use of silicon questioned long-standing industry norms. Ulysse Nardin aptly describes this a "true UFO in the wonderful world of traditional Swiss watchmaking. inch
A quarter of a century later on, the Freak has evolved in to what Ulysse Nardin phone calls a "veritable laboratory within the wrist, " boasting 35 patents and 17 unique movements. In 2023, the actual Grand Prix d'Horlogerie hun Genève (GPHG) awarded the particular "Iconic Watch" prize towards the Freak [ONE]. The particular brand's momentum has carried on well beyond this milestone-from the "Super Freak" revealed at Watches & Wonders and the more everyday-wearable iterations of the Freak, to the beautiful enamel and guilloché workmanship seen in the Freak [ONE]. The "Howlite" version stands as the most refined section in this collection to date-a release that resonates especially strongly with North American enthusiasts.

Presenting the Freak [S Howlite]
The Freak S represents the most ambitious development within the Freak collection. Released in 2022, it improves the essence of the Freak right into a three-dimensional realm: approximately 95% of the movement's components have been in motion, ensuring that no 2 timepieces look exactly as well. Such an intricate design needs exceptional skill; each Fanatic [S Howlite] is assembled from seed to fruition by a single master watch manufacture specializing in the brand's the majority of complex complications.

The time will be read in a single minute-a fine detail that captures the very cardiovascular of the watch. Comprising 373 components, the in-house UN-251 movement functions like a revolving carousel, completing one complete revolution on its own axis each and every 60 minutes, with a pointer in the tip of the elongated motion indicating the minutes. Underneath this, a rotating hours disc-equipped with its own devoted indicator-completes a full rotation every single 12 hours. To accommodate this advanced mechanical architecture, the watch makes use of six gear trains, while most mechanical timepieces depend on only two.
Its keeping time mechanism is equally non-traditional: two oversized silicon oscillators, each inclined at a 20-degree angle, vibrate at a rate of recurrence of 18, 000 heurt per hour, regulated by si balance wheels and a DIAMonSIL® escapement. Connecting these two oscillators is what Ulysse Nardin telephone calls the world's smallest up and down mechanical differential-an assembly composed of 47 components and 6 ceramic ball bearings, made to average out the oscillation eq of the two balance tires.

Since 2001, silicon continues to be woven into the DNA on the Freak collection. The movements features ten silicon elements, including the balance wheels as well as hairsprings, all produced by Sigatec-the brand's dedicated silicon lab in Sion. Furthermore, typically the patented DIAMonSIL® technology-introduced inside 2007-applies a diamond covering to the escapement, enabling this to withstand more than 150 million impacts per year.

Then you have the crown-or rather, the lack thereof. To set the time, one should disengage the safety lock at the six position and rotate often the bi-directional bezel. To by hand wind the watch, you transform it over and rotate the caseback counter-clockwise using both usb; this engages the trademarked Grinder® system, which transfers energy directly to the mainspring barrel.

First unveiled within the 2017 Freak InnoVision two concept watch, the Grinder® winding system was designed to power the high energy, dual-oscillator movement-in this example, providing a 72-hour power reserve. Turning the Freak in this manner turns into a small ritual, which, within our view, is half the enjoyment of owning one.

Typically the Howlite Edition
What makes this particular timepiece its position as a North American exclusive is usually its use of gemstone dép?t. Howlite is a naturally occurring white-colored mineral characterized by distinctive grey-black veining. It was first found in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada, by the Canadian chemist and geologist Henry Exactly how, after whom it is called. In this model-dubbed the "Freak [S Howlite]"-the howlite is sourced through Canada and meticulously designed in Switzerland. Incorporating the mineral native to North america into a timepiece designed especially for the North American continent creates a compelling narrative.

Dealing with this material is no simple job. Howlite is relatively soft and also fragile; the raw natural stone must first be drilled and then sliced into slim wafers using a wire noticed. Each piece is thoroughly inspected for its whiteness, veining, and overall characteristics-with approximately 60% failing to make the slice. The remaining pieces are processed to their final thickness, refined, and coated with a protecting varnish. This process preserves the actual mineral's natural appearance while ensuring it meets the particular exacting tolerances required through the Freak S movement.

The time and effort is well worth it. Against this marble-like, pristine white surface, typically the rotating flying movement-featuring twin inclined oscillators and a differential-appears to float above the hour or so disc, enhancing the 3d quality and legibility with the caliber. In our view, this particular light-toned stone provides a exceptional backdrop for the movement when compared with any lacquered finish; that imbues each watch having a unique, one-of-a-kind character not having distracting from the mechanical overall performance.

The rest of the timepiece is similarly focused on the wearer's encounter. The 45mm case, viser, crown, and caseback tend to be crafted from grey titanium-a materials Ulysse Nardin notes is around 45% lighter than stainless-steel. The movement can be adored through a sapphire crystal caseback. The watch measures 13. 66mm in thickness (16. 65mm overall) and is water-resistant to thirty meters. It is paired with any white rubber strap having a ballistic texture and a ti folding clasp-a sporty visual that complements the gemstone dial far better than 1 might initially expect. Often the Freak [S Howlite] watch, reference 2513-500LE-9A-HOW/3A, marks a return of the switch to the Freak collection-25 many years after the series first first showed its dial-free design. Ulysse Nardin has achieved this specific by incorporating a dial constructed from a piece of natural stone which took millions of years to create.
